一篇英语美文-The love story of a grain of sand
To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.
---William Blake

Once upon a time, there laid two grains of sand on the deep sea. They are distant from each other only three inches. One of them falls in love with the other one day. He gazed at his beloved at three-inches away, passing several years in calm happiness. No matter what great transformations happened on the land, it remains serene in the deep blue sea. The sand feels happy, for he can look at his beloved sand everyday.

Dinosaur’s footsteps appear on the sandy beach. The moon waxes and wanes; the tide flow and ebb, yet it has nothing to do with the sand in the deep sea. However, the sand suddenly comes up with an idea that he wants to speak out his love in front of the other sand, and then he embarks on his long long journey. He moves little by little with the help of any dynamic force, a weak undercurrent or a feeble swirl stirred by fishes. He feels grateful whenever he has such opportunity to make a tiny movement.

The footsteps on the beach change to saber-toothed tigers. The oceans waves roll and wash ashore, erasing any left traces silently. The sand is distant from his beloved only two inches now. Till the time when mankind left footsteps on the beach, the sand came in front of his beloved. He gazes at her and recalls his coming way of three inches in the past two hundred million years. At the very moment he feels that he is the happiest creature in the world. The two grains of sand look at each other in their eyes, not saying a single word.

At the very moment when the sand decides to speak, a torrent comes up, and a great force inhales the grain of sand into a big hole. He looks at his long journey and his beloved sand for the last time, not knowing what to say. Then the hole closes and all is darkness. He knows that an oyster captures him.
In the following years the oyster opens the shell occasionally, when the sand has opportunity see the outside world. All that he sees is his beloved sand gazing and waiting him at the distance. The sand feels that the world is beautiful, because in the deep blue sea where the sun cannot corrode, a grain of tiny sand is waiting for him.
One day the sand feels the oyster is wavering and then opens its shell. What come up to the eyes of the grain of sand are sea surface, sunshine and mankind, who look at him with extraordinary exultation. The sand looks at himself and gets to know that he has changed to a big and perfect pearl of priceless value to mankind, yet to the pearl producer, the oyster, it is but a painful accident. Soon the pearl is inlayed into the crown of a king. The sand that has become a pearl now, feels sad, yet not despair, for he knows that his beloved sand is silently waiting for him under the deep sea.

The sand as a pearl on the crown sees the worships of the officials of all ranks, sees the prosperity and decadence of the king as well as the empire. When the king dies, the sand with the crown is placed into a cemetery with its owner. When the door of the cemetery closes, the sand thinks of his love helplessly. He is not frustrated yet, for he has enough time. He still remembers that he traveled two hundred millions years for the three-inches distance.
He does not feel lonely in the dark cemetery, for occasionally the rats will come to visit. He stays alone, not sensing the passing time. Years and years later two tomb raiders steal the crown and the pearl. Unfortunately, they come into strife for the biggest pearl and both died. The pearl is fallen on the ground by the riverbank. New hope ignites in the sand’s heart, stronger than ever before. He knows that all the water in the river will at last influx to the sea. Till the rain season, he will go down the river with the water flow to search her grain of sand in the sea. It may take thousands of years to the original place, but he has patience, for he knows that she is still waiting in the sea, gazing with eager expectation.
Soon the rain season comes; unfortunately not rain but a mud-rock flow embraces him. Buried underground, the sand feels disappointed, yet he believes that he still has chance, because the land is also in movement, even faster than himself.

Another long waiting in darkness. The layer of the pearl has exfoliated and the sand returns to its original looks. He feels happy because he can return to his love clean and unchanged. One day it rumbles: the sound of exploiting a gold mine. The sand is then thrown to a hot pot together with other ores, stones and dirt. Not until that moment does he notice that he has become a grain of gold sand. Not long later he is melted together with other gold and cast into a brick, then stored up in a treasury. The sand spends years in sorrow and feels piercing pain when thinking of the sand under sea. He comforts himself that he still has chance: perhaps in the future he will be unforeseeably transformed to a sand and return to the sea. Then he will search the whole ocean for the sand that is still waiting for him.
One day the sand is took out of the treasury with the gold brick, not knowing what a huge task is going to assigned to him. The brick is made into a phonograph record with all languages and sounds on the earth, including the sound of sea bellow. Until the record is fixed on a rocket waiting to launch he becomes panic-stricken. He asks the gold besides him: “where are we going?” “Fly to the universe to transfer mankind’s voice and information to other possible life.” The gold responds to him proudly, “ not all gold have such glorious opportunity.” At the moment the rocket launches to the universe.
The sand turns back to the earth behind, which looks beautiful and delicate in the universe. He suddenly realizes that he can never return to the sea, to the side of his beloved sand that is still waiting in the deep sea without his promise or a single word. The sand has very glorious history: he had been the most beautiful pearl, the purest gold, now as a messenger of the Earth. While he would rather be a grain of sand in the deep ocean, spending an hour by the side of his love then dies immediately, only for the simple love between two simple sands.
A shrill of the sand is drifting in the universal air, long, long and never goes.
